Binge-reading books in a series

Tuesday saw the long-awaited arrival of book #11 in Jane Casey’s Maeve Kerrigan series, so that day lost to reading, Wednesday ,I re-read the entire book. Which not only explains my tardiness in posting and commenting but also leaves me very envious of Jane Casey’s talents, and prompts; hence the following prompt words:

Words for the coming week: adopt jealousy talent

Entries by midnight  Thursday March 28th,  new words Friday March 29th

Usual rules: 100 words maximum (excluding title) of flash fiction or poetry using all three words above in the genres of horror, fantasy, science fiction or noir. Serialised fiction is, as always, welcome. All variants and uses of the words and stems are fine. Feel free to post links to your stories on Facebook or whichever.

  1. The Secret Armadillo Soldier (SAS) Diaries - entry 265

Aggie’s grubby snout appeared in the narrow hole between them and with a skitter of loose soil she wriggled into the tunnel and swiftly adopted a ‘soldier ready to report’ stance. She sported a fresh lump on her forehead and the stench from her claws death-danced thickly into the still air as she shook off the dirt and stood up. She glanced at the big ‘Dillo, ‘I aint jealous or nothing’ but he’s sure got a talent for picking the right place t’ dig, Sarg,

Sarg nosed at blood spotting the small ‘Dillo's shoulders, ‘Lets ‘ave yer report soldier.’

    2. I enjoyed the stench from her claws. Who knows what filth she may encounter in the dirt. I don't recall Aggie, she must be new since my last time here.

  2. Thresholds new [14]

Riding roughly eastwards, in expectation of eight hours of daylight, it wasn’t long before my lack of practice necessitated I adopt a levitated position to ease the chafing of my thighs and buttocks. Ahead, Raven rode easy; not so much due to greater talent as less abundant flesh. Eventually, I had to admit, despite half an hour spent in contemplation of his narrower bum, pain persisted in intruding, and jealousy no salve.
I spurred my mount forward. Raven, believing I intended to race, did likewise, not hearing my thin-voiced wail of ‘Stop!’

    1. I see the duo is on horseback once again. Even though I haven't been here in a bit, I have no problem picking up with the story again. Well done.

    2. Clever insertion of the prompt words, Sandra as well as subtle hints adding to the physical description of the characters too.

  3. The Interview

The power couple sat in rigid armchairs. One checked his watch, the other glanced at her chiming phone.
“It’s so refreshing to see people of your status consider adoption,” said the administrator.
“Quite,” said the man. “We require good looks, talent, intelligence. The best traits.”
“And don’t forget,” said the woman. “We want the other parents to experience jealousy.”
    “Yes, we need that too.”
“Shall we talk about the baby’s care?” said the administrator.
“The nanny will come in for that. Just get us a list as soon as possible.” The couple rose and strode out of the room.
